Can you legally get married the same day?

One of the biggest reasons Las Vegas is such a popular elopement destination? You can legally get married the same day you get your marriage license.

No waiting period. No blood test. No sitting around for three days wondering if you’re actually allowed to do the thing you came to Vegas to do.

In Nevada, once you’ve obtained your marriage license, you can get married right away. The Clark County Marriage License Bureau is also open 7 days a week, from 8 a.m. to midnight, which makes a spontaneous Vegas wedding surprisingly easy to pull off.

But there’s a little more to it than simply walking into a chapel and saying “I do.”

Here’s how the same-day marriage process actually works.

Yes, You Can Get Married the Same Day in Las Vegas

Let’s get the most important part out of the way.

Yes. You can legally get married in Las Vegas on the same day.

Nevada does not have a waiting period for marriage licenses. Once you and your partner obtain your license, you’re legally able to have your ceremony.

This is one of the reasons Vegas is basically perfect for couples who don’t want to spend a year planning a wedding.

You can arrive in Las Vegas, get your paperwork handled, have your ceremony, take some killer photos, and start your married life.

Of course, we still recommend planning ahead if you want a specific date, photographer, location, or elopement package. Same-day legal marriage doesn’t necessarily mean every wedding vendor will have same-day availability.

There’s a difference between legally possible and logistically smart.

What Do You Need to Get Married in Las Vegas?

Before your ceremony, both of you need to obtain a marriage license from the Clark County Marriage License Bureau.

You’ll need:

Both parties to be present
Government-issued photo identification
To meet Nevada’s legal requirements for marriage
Your marriage license before the ceremony

The Clark County Clerk currently lists the marriage license fee as $102.

You can also complete the marriage license application online ahead of time. The application remains in the system for one year, but you still need to appear together in person to receive your license.

And here’s another thing Vegas makes ridiculously convenient: you don’t need an appointment at the Marriage License Bureau. It’s a walk-in process.

That doesn’t mean you should necessarily wait until the last possible second, though.

If you’re planning a full elopement experience with photography, hair and makeup, transportation, or a specific location, having your timeline planned ahead of time will make the day much less chaotic.

Can You Get Your Marriage License and Get Married Within Hours?

Yep.

This is where Las Vegas really earns its reputation.

Once you’ve received your marriage license, there is no required waiting period before your ceremony.

So, in theory, your day could look something like this:

Morning: Pick up your marriage license.

Afternoon: Hair, makeup, getting dressed, and heading to your ceremony location.

Later that day: Exchange vows, take photos, celebrate, and officially start your married life.

That’s completely possible.

But There’s One Important Detail: The Ceremony Still Needs to Be Legal

Getting a marriage license does not mean you’re automatically married.

You still need an actual marriage ceremony performed by an authorized Nevada officiant. Clark County specifically states that the ceremony must be performed in Nevada by an officiant licensed in Nevada.

You’ll also need at least one witness in addition to the officiant.

This is where having an experienced Vegas elopement team can make things much easier.

Instead of trying to figure out the legal requirements, find an officiant, locate a photographer, organize your flowers, schedule hair and makeup, and build a timeline all on your own, you can have those pieces coordinated for you.

That’s especially helpful if you’re traveling to Vegas from somewhere else.

What About Your Marriage Certificate?

This is another area where couples sometimes get confused.

Your marriage license is not the same thing as proof of marriage.

After your ceremony, your officiant files the marriage certificate with the Clark County Clerk’s Office. The officiant has up to 10 calendar days to deliver the certificate for filing.

Once the certificate has been filed, you can order a certified copy as proof of your marriage.

So while you can absolutely get legally married on the same day, don’t expect to walk out of your ceremony with the final certified marriage certificate in your hand that afternoon.

The legal marriage happens through the properly completed ceremony and filing process. The certified copy is documentation you can obtain afterward.

That’s an important distinction if you’re planning to use your marriage certificate for things like changing your name, immigration paperwork, insurance, or other legal purposes.

What If You Want a Same-Day Vegas Elopement?
